STORYMODE

Learners explore the virtual world of the Raspberry Pi Edition of Minecraft and learn electronic concepts through engaging, interactive game levels. In Chameleon Giant, learn how the human eye translates light into color as you save a world that’s lost all color. Solve puzzles as you learn about distance and frequency at Post No. 34 ½. In Terresense, change the state of water by adding or removing energy, and learn how shifting temperatures impact the environment around you.

PIPERCODE

PiperCode uses Blockly by Google, a drag & drop coding language that enables students to modify and change how their electronics work on the Raspberry Pi. Learn about RGB values and create your own language by assigning letters to colors to send secret messages encoded in color. Create an alarm system to detect would-be intruders from a distance and alert you to their presence, and express yourself by assigning an emoji to a temperature range.

COLOR SENSOR

Ever wonder why you see a rainbow when it’s stormy outside? When sunlight passes through moisture in the clouds, all of the colors that make up the spectrum of visible light get separated into the rainbow we see. The Color Sensor in your kit emits white light similar to sunlight. When this white light hits an object, particular colors are absorbed, trans- mitted, and reflected. The reflected colors are then processed using a filter into: Red, Green and Blue (RGB) values.

TEMPERATURE SENSOR

Ever heard of Silicon Valley? That’s because silicon is a popular material used in electronics. Temperature sensors utilize silicon to read voltage differences. Voltage is the potential for electrical current to flow. When changes in voltage are detected, the sensor can measure changes in temperature. Temperature sensors have applications like preheating your oven to a specific temperature to bake cookies!

ULTRASONIC RANGE FINDER

Ever wish you could fly like a bat or swim like a dolphin? Ultrasonic Range Finders use sound waves to locate objects in the same way these animals use echolocation. The Ultrasonic Range Finder in your kit sends out a sound wave. When this sound wave reaches an object, it bounces off that object and is then received by a microphone. Based on the time it takes for the sound wave to return to the sensor, your range finder can calculate how far away an object is!
