CURRICULUM GUIDE / PHASE 1 / VOCABULARY
Phase 1 - What is a Computer?
Learn some of the basics of the vocabulary we'll be using throughout this phase using the table and then test yourself using the flashcards.
- Blueprint
-
- a photographic print in white on a bright blue ground (or blue on a white background) used for copying maps, mechanical drawings, and architects' plans
- Breadboard
a flexible wiring board that lets us connect components to the Raspberry Pi and containing lots of holes where wires and electronic components can be inserted.
- Buttons
basic electronic components to momentarily close circuits and provide user input control (often by pushing on them).
- Computer Base
- an enclosure to physically mount and contain all of the components of a computer.
- Computer Mouse
- an input device that is used with a personal computer. Moving a mouse along a flat surface can move the on-screen cursor to different items on the screen. Items can be moved or selected by pressing the mouse buttons (called clicking).
- Computer Screen or Display
- a flat surface on which a picture or series of pictures is projected or reflected.; the surface on which the image appears in an electronic display (as in a television set, radar receiver, or computer terminal)
- Computer
- a programmable, usually electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data
- GPIO Pins (General Purpose Input Output)
- a programmable interface that connects almost anything (such as buttons and LEDs) to the Raspberry Pi.
- HDMI Cable: (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)
- a audio/video cable for transmitting video and digital audio data from a source device such as a computer, set top box, or DVD player, to a display device such as a TV, monitor, or screen.
- Input
- what is put in, taken in, or operated on by a computer or system. Also a device which enables putting information into a computer, or operation of the computer.
- Inventory
- an itemized list of goods on hand with a count of how many are available.
- Output
- what is taken out, or has been produced a computer or system. A place where power or information leaves a system. Also a device which displays, prints, or provides a method to retrieve information from a computer.
- Pin
- a metal projection from the Raspberry Pi board that makes an electrical connection with a wire, socket or another part of a circuit. Pins provide a method of controlling external devices by connecting them to the integrated circuit (or chip) on the board.
- Piper
- the computer that prepares kids for a lifetime of building technology.
- Piper Storage Box
- an enclosure for storing the electronic parts that are used for Piper electronics projects.
- Power Bank Cable
- an electrical cable, an assembly of one or more electrical conductors with a protective cover, used for transmission of electrical power.
- Raspberry Pi
- a low cost microcomputer with all components on one board. Together with Raspbian, a special operating system, Raspberry Pi is a full blown computer.
- SD Card
- a memory card that stores data, programs, and operating systems for use in portable devices.
- Sequence
- identifying a series of steps for a task
- Speaker
- a device that converts audio signals into the equivalent air vibrations in order to make audible sound.
- Switches
- basic electronic components that provide on/off method to close circuits.
- USB Cable
- a Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a common interface that enables communication between devices and a computer. It connects peripheral devices such as cameras, mice, keyboards, printers, media devices, hard drives and flash drives.
