By all accounts, 2019 has been a monumental year here at Piper. We’ve launched groundbreaking new products while making exciting updates to the Piper Computer Kit.

We also received a string of accolades in recognition of our contributions to STEAM education, and had the opportunity to meet many of you at major education and technology events.

In celebration of our achievements, we’ve gathered the highlights of 2019 in this blogpost.

Ushering in New Leaders

At the beginning of 2019, Piper welcomed its new CEO, Dave Lundgren.

Dave is the steward of Piper’s vision, mission, direction, and impact. A veteran technologist, Dave has several decades of experience building successful companies, teams, technologies, iconic products & processes.

With almost 30 years working in the Bay Area alone, Dave believes technology has come to imply impenetrable, addictive portals where individuals trade personal information for content. He’s especially passionate to be guiding Piper because it makes technology understandable, accessible, equitable, and fun for all students.

Empowering Women in STEAM & Business

Equity in education is a core tenet here at Piper. We strive to bring girls the best STEAM education opportunities and support females in all aspects of technology, science, and business.

In 2019 Piper saw an exponential growth in female leadership roles. Melissa Belardi was appointed as Piper’s first Chief Academic Officer. Melissa steers Piper’s academic strategy, designs our STEAM curriculum, and oversees our instructional team.

Prior to her time at Piper, Melissa was a STEAM classroom teacher in grades 5-12 and curriculum designer for Middle School STEAM and in Personal Finance Education. Melissa believes that the only way to empower change and ensure equality is through a commitment to quality education for all. This belief has permeated many of the initiatives she’s spearheaded at Piper.

Melissa was recently featured on FOX Business News, and you can watch her spotlight here.

Groundbreaking Product Developments

Introducing the Next Generation Piper Computer Kit

The Piper Computer Kit that has been upgraded and re-engineered for greater engagement and deeper learning.

After rigorous research and development, the updated Piper Computer Kit is more robust and provides learners with a more immersive STEAM learning experience. The new Piper Computer Kit can now be disassembled and rebuilt more than 10 times, giving it a shelf life of over two years.

Additionally, our software team has been hard at work developing new content for learners in StoryMode, PiperCode, and exciting projects on our blog! We want to ensure that users continue to learn and grow along with Piper.

Meet the Command Center BETA

Based on Piper's unique approach to "inside-out learning", our team developed a brand new experience for older and more advanced learners. The Piper Command Center is a build-your-own controller kit that harnesses the hands-on power of connecting building, circuitry, and coding.

Launching the Premium Curriculum

As part of Piper’s mission to deliver quality  STEAM education for all students, we launched the Piper Premium Curriculum to offer educators enhanced instructional resources for their Piper programs.

Built on the next generation 5E Instructional Model, the Premium Curriculum engages students through the 5E’s: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

Introducing PiperCode Spanish

In continuation of Piper’s mission to create greater access to STEAM and Computer Science, PiperCode has been expanded to include Spanish translation.

Now, students have to power to explore computational thinking bilingually, increasing comprehension and building stronger connections in both language and coding.
